In 2012, Loud&Clear began work with Telstra on an unprecedented new campaign; rethinking and revolutionising the way Telstra inducted and trained their in-store staff. Their aim was to increase speed to competency, and drastically reduce attrition within the national network of Telstra stores by rebuilding their training methodology from the ground up. The result was the Telstra On-Board Induction – or, TOBI.
TOBI manifested itself primarily as a tablet application which could be accessed anywhere, anytime, by any Telstra employee, and promoted a collaborative, online learning space. Simple, fun game mechanics were used to reinvigorate and convey otherwise tired training techniques, complemented by beautiful, streamlined multiple-choice tests and instructional documentation.
The jewel in TOBI’s crown is VILT – a first-of-its-kind learning platform which facilitates instant online video conferences between trainer and trainee, allowing collaborative group moderating, slideshow images, note-taking and file-sharing. The trainee’s 90-day induction period is monitored seamlessly by a back-end system, accessible to training staff and designed by Loud&Clear to perfectly complement and support the trainee experience.
After a full year of development and a six-month trial period, TOBI is now the standard induction and training tool for every new employee in every Telstra shopfront across the country. What this means for Telstra is a rapid acceleration in employee competence and satisfaction, job retention at an all-time high, and increased cost efficiency. What TOBI meant for Loud&Clear was the opportunity to build a piece of cutting-edge technology for one of Australia’s premium service provider brands, experimenting with learning models and technology we had never used before, resulting in a world-class, greenfield product; a watershed in the learning and development space.
